Genevieve Camp - One Shot, Six Years In The Making

By Vic Stickels

In 1952 Genevieve Camp embarked on her first bowhunt. It wasn't until 1958 that she finally connected with her first bow kill.

Mrs. Camp was from Galena Maryland and hunting Kent County on the states eastern shore.

Taking a position overlooking a knee high hay field with her 44lb Bear Cub bow in the afternoon it wasn't long when two bucks come travelling with a doe through the grass. Walking straight at her was the biggest buck she had ever seen while hunting.

While it was still a ways from her she raised up and drew back her arrow tipped with a Hills Hornet Broadhead. When the big Buck got withing 25 yards it turned broadside an she made her release. The arrow hit its mark and the Buck ran off.

She sat there waiting for her husband and another hunter to met up with her. By the time they got to her they determined it was too dark to track so they would return the next morning. The next morning they returned to the spot and found her Buck laying dead 100 yards from where she arrowed it. Her Buck won the biggest Deer taken in a contest that year.

Genevieves family was Bowhunters, and in those days many families or couples were. In 1955 her husband, Eugene arrowed Marylands biggest Buck to date. And their sons were archers/bowhunters as well.

Mrs. Camp was born in 1923, She was a 1941 graduate of Millington High School. For 30 years she worked in the Galena and Millington School Cafeterias, and later in life cared for elderly.
Mrs. Camp was a member of the Olivet United Methodist Church, where she was active with Bible Study and had taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Galena Homemakers and Busy Bees.
