Art That Defines An Experience

Illustrator Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in contributing your artwork to Trad Hunters Magazine—a print publication inspired by the timeless grit of 1950s outdoor adventure digests.

We welcome illustration submissions that capture the spirit of traditional bowhunting, wilderness adventure, and retro storytelling. If your art reflects the old ways, you’re in the right place.

What We’re Looking For

Each issue of Trad Hunters Magazine is built around a central theme—whether it’s rugged mountain hunts, hardwood whitetails, or the deep traditions of the South. We accept and commission artwork that fits these themes in tone, composition, and visual style.

We're especially drawn to:

  • Vintage pen-and-ink style illustrations (1950s outdoor magazine look)
  • Black-and-white or grayscale line work
  • Traditional mediums such as gouache, watercolor, or oil on board with a retro outdoor aesthetic
  • Atmospheric, textured pieces that convey grit, solitude, and story
  • Bold compositions with strong silhouettes and a timeless outdoor feel

Illustration Types Needed

  • Story Art: Spot illustrations, vignettes, or full-page art to accompany written features
  • Thematic Dividers: Visual markers that open or close sections
  • Historical Scenes: Re-creations of legendary hunts or bowhunters
  • Camp & Gear Sketches: Classic visual references of traditional setups, bows, or survival tools
  • Black-and-White Comics: Single-page humor or atmospheric wilderness storytelling
  • Cover Art: (By invitation only)

🗒 Article Assignments

If your portfolio fits the tone and style of Trad Hunters Magazine, you may be invited to illustrate a specific article or story in an upcoming issue. These assignments are matched based on subject matter, your preferred style or medium, and timeline availability.

You’re also welcome to pitch concept art for potential stories or editorial features—we’re always open to collaborating from the ground up.

Style & Format Requirements

  • Resolution: 300dpi minimum (for print)
  • Color: Black & white or grayscale preferred, though full-color traditional media may be accepted depending on placement
  • File Types: PNG or TIFF (for final digital delivery)
  • Orientation: Let us know if your piece is intended as full-page, half-page, or spot art
  • Aesthetic Fit: All artwork must align with Trad Hunters’ vintage visual tone. Minor layout adjustments (e.g., cropping, contrast) may be made. Full credit will always be given.

Compensation

Compensation is offered and will be discussed upon acceptance, based on the scope of work and whether you’re contributing a completed piece, working on commission, or submitting artwork on spec.

We aim to build long-term relationships with illustrators who share our passion for traditional hunting culture, storytelling, and timeless art.

How to Submit

Send your submission or inquiry to:

📧 trad@standingwolfarchery.com

Please include:

  • Subject Line: Illustration Submission: [Your Name]

  • (Optional) Let us know if you’re interested in illustrating for a specific upcoming theme (e.g. The Great Lakes, The Deep South, etc.)

Rights & Usage

Submitting artwork for consideration does not grant Trad Hunters Magazine any rights to use, publish, or reproduce your work. All rights remain solely with the artist unless the work is officially accepted for publication or commissioned.

If your work is accepted, you agree to allow Trad Hunters Magazine to publish it in print, on our website, and across our social media platforms. Minor layout or tonal adjustments may be made to suit our vintage design standards. A simple agreement outlining compensation and usage rights will be provided upon acceptance. Full credit is always given to the artist.

Let’s bring these stories to life—one ink line, brushstroke, or painted panel at a time.

We look forward to seeing your work and sharing it with the Trad Hunters community.
